She was at school. Alone. With Matthews being the only one to watch her and Zay being his backup along with the rest of the class. The bribed her in with the blueberry donuts, but it was well known that wouldn't last long. She already pre-emptively accepted the fact she was going to have detention. There was no Riley to mellow her out. There was no Lucas to hold her back. And Farkle knew better. He was looking at Cory confused as to why this was happening, getting a distressed shrug from the history teacher.
"Alright. Before anything, we've got a new student comin' in, today."
At those words, Maya shifted to hook her foot under Riley's chair, giving Farkle a look to tell him to do the same with Lucas'. No one was taking their spots. Even if those were the only two open chairs.
"Maya. Farkle. Put the desks back."
"Sir, what if we have Farkle time for the entire class? The new student can temporarily take my seat until we figure out somewhere else for him to sit, and you can sit behind your desk the entire time while I give whatever lesson I so please and believe fits whatever situation is going on today."
"Or we can introduce Hiro Hamada to the class, and do things like how I think normal classes work." The man got a look from his entire class "No? Alright, we'll play it by ear."
Maya finished the donut in hand, reluctantly pushing the desk back to its normal position, a glare still in her eyes at the man who treated her like a daughter. "I shouldn't even be here. Riles isn't here. You let her stay home."
"She's got food poisoning from lunch yesterday, Maya."
"Just introduce the new nerd, then, and let's be done with it." She looked to the door as it opened up for said student.
Hiro wanted, more than anything, to be back in San Fransokyo. He didn't know a thing about this side of the country save for that Aunt Cass had moved him and his brother there after Hiro had gotten the both of them arrested for bot fighting one too many times.
Specifically, he'd gotten himself and Tadashi arrested once, and Aunt Cass panicked. At least she already had a cafe out here. That was familiar territory.
As was being called 'nerd'. He bristled some, frowning at the conversation on the other side of the door and then, shifting his backpack, he pushed the door open and stuck his head in.
"Uh...hi." Stepping through the door, he let it close a bit too soon, catching his backpack. There's flailing, a disgruntled 'ugh' and he disentangles himself, stepping in and heading to stand near the teachers desk.
"I'm Hiro Hamada and the people at the office said to come here."
Farkle had moved Lucas' desk back to its proper position entirely as Cory spoke again
"Alright. Unless you wanna tell us a bit about yourself, go ahead take a-"
Maya had moved to sit on top of Lucas' desk with one foot in her chair, the other in Rileys before he even finished speaking, a look that just said 'I know what happens next I'm not moving' directed right at him.
"... Seat... Maya, sit at your desk."
"I already know I've got detention, Matthews, and that's a problem for you to deal with after school." That was definitely a challenge being issued, but the staredown eventually lead to her growling and huffing before plopping into her actual seat, moving Rileys desk to its original position. "Fine."
"Right. So, last time we didn't really get too far in the lesson, so we'll be touchin' upon the New World." Cory turned to write on the board as Hiro was left to choose one of the two open seats. Front row or second.
"The last time you tried teaching this lesson you ran Lucas out of the room" Maya snickered with a grin at that memory
Hiro recognizes territorial when he sees it and kinda finds it amusing, so Maya gets a small smirk from him as he chooses a seat nearby, but obviously not in her turf. When he's invited to introduce himself, he drops his backpack on the floor and starts rummaging through it as he talks. There's something metal inside
"Like I said, I'm Hiro Hamada. I'm from San Fransokyo, California and I build fully-functioning robots for fun."
And here comes one of them, set on his desk. It has a derpy smile on it's face and instead of staying upright, it falls over and kind of slumps, Hiro smiling awkwardly behind it as he pokes at an app on his iPad.
"How did I call it so well?" Maya was genuinely surprised that she had called Hiro out as a nerd before he even walked into the room "He's bordering Farkle levels" She extended one hand behind her with an extended finger to tell Zay that not even one word was to leave his lips. "Again, she ain't here, I ain't takin' responsibility for my actions if you say something dumb."
"My lips are sealed" The Texan left in the room rose his hands before moving one to 'zip' his mouth shut
"Go on, robot boy, show off. We're not gonna learn anything else here today anyway." He rested an elbow on Lucas' desk and rested her cheek in her hand to watch what was going to happen next.
Oh, she chose her words poorly. Show off? That's the last thing someone wants to say to a Hamada, especially this one. So he touches a few buttons on the iPad and the bot springs to life. The smile is swiftly replaced by something angrier and Hiro's own expression shifts to one of passive boredom. The bot, meanwhile, has taken to parkouring around the room, bouncing and flipping from desk to desk, spinning all over the place
At one point, it splits into three separate pieces that spin and flip and roll around until all three are on Mr Matthew's desk They reform into the original bot, the face switches back to the happy yellow smile and it bows before slumping again.
"Like I said, it's just a small hobby. Something I tinker with."
Tinker. Right. Even Mr Matthews looks a bit surprised.
The classroom as a whole was definitely impressed, Farkle having a special gleam to his eye as the prospect of having someone in the class with brains that match his, something Maya recognized immediately. And debated for two whole seconds warning Cory about before shrugging it off thinking it'd be more amusing to watch what chaos unfolded before Riley got back to school.
"Looks like we've got two different styles of Farkle in the room, now." Which was to say she liked your style, Hiro. And she looked around the room for anyone ready to comment on the fact she sounded like she was mocking Farkle because there would be a dangerous glare sent at them.
Farkle decided to translate for the new kid because Maya and speaking nice without Riley was harder than with Riley. "What she means is welcome to our class. Take a seat and watch as we don't learn anything about what we were promised a year ago on the chalkboard." Now it was Farkles turn to stare Cory down with narrowed eyes as the teacher threw his hands in the air in surrender.
Hiro's smile is a bit sly and amused at the reactions he received, even shooting Mr Matthews an apologetic smile and a small bow before retrieving his bot and sitting down, a s***-eating grin on his face. Cool. Okay. He was going to like it here.
When Maya speaks, she has his full attention and he can't help but note she kinda looks like Honey Lemon (who he has a crush on) and acts like Go-Go (who he also has a crush on). So...yeah. That's interesting.
He turns to look at Farkle and asks "I'm guessing you're Farkle one-point-oh?" And nods at the answer, looking at Maya again.
"I heard the teacher call you Maya. Is that right?" Just to be sure.
"Yup." There was a roll of her shoulders in a shrug before looking to the words on the board again. The chances of her staying awake too much longer were unlikely, but she would remain impressive either way when it came down to it. "Hey Matthews before you start teaching about that whole 'New World' thing like you tried last time - Y'know when you made Sundance hop over three desks and book it out of the room" She had a shit-eating grin of her own on her face as she saw that familiar huffiness on their teachers face at that "You mind if I give Hiro a rundown of how this class really works or you wanna do it?"
Cory looked dumbfounded for a second before defeated and sighed, gesturing to Maya to explain.
"He tries an actual lesson unless he's clued into what's going on in kids lives before we get here, typically during breakfast, and it changes upon noticing something's wrong here or anything like that. He's tried teaching the same lesson about a dozen times and we wound up getting life lessons from history instead. Oh and I just sleep the entire time."
Zay leaned forward to sprawl across Lucas' empty desk to get closer to the conversation. "Quite impressively, too. Didn't know you could sleep with your eyes open until I came here." He sank back into his seat. "Oh and you'll be meetin' the guy that sits here tomorrow. His Pappy Joe-"
Maya snorted "Pappy Joe..."
"And mom gave the airport a real good screamin' and he's gettin' on the next plane from Austin to here." He then leaned over and in a not-so-whisper "Also don't worry she's a bit nicer when Riley's here." He then leaned back into his seat.

Pick one. Use them all. Mix and match. Basically, have fun.
